The German banks

KFW is a federal bank tasked with providing affordable capital to the German retail banks. This affords immunity from the current credit conditions for renewable energy projects.

In the first half of 2008 KfW Förderbank provided EUR 3.2 billion in loans to finance industrial pollution control investments and the use of renewable energies. This was an increase of 19 % over the first half of 2007.

Commitments under the programme 'Solar Energy Generation' rose particularly strongly. This financing programme supports the construction, expansion and acquisition of small photovoltaic systems.

In the first six months of 2008, low-interest loans totalling EUR 239 million were committed under this programme. That was 42% more than in the first half of 2007.

Since the programme started in 2005, photovoltaic systems with a nominal capacity of 400 MW were installed under the programme.
